World Health Organization South-East Asia Region – WHO SEARO:
Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities is held every year on 3 December and aims to improve global understanding of people with disability issues as well as showing support for them to improve their self-esteem, well-being and rights in society.
The WHO South-East Asia Region has the 2nd highest prevalence of disability in the world with 16% of the population having a moderate or severe disability, of which 2.9% are severely disabled.
Some disabilities such as mental and psycho-social disabilities, intellectual disabilities, as well as hearing impairments, are not always visible.
This year’s theme is “Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want”. It notes the recent adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their role in building a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities.
